Education

Michal studied chemistry at the Charles University in Prague, Faculty of Science, and obtained a Master degree in 2002, working on the “Synthesis of pyridinium oligomers for molecular electronics applications”.  He continued his studies at the Charles University in Prague under the supervision of Dr. Jaroslav Pecka and prof. Václav Všetečka, working on the “Synthesis of modular components for molecular electronics”.  During his PhD study, he was a visiting researcher at the University of Colorado at Boulder, U.S.A in the research group of prof. Josef Michl (2002-2003).  From 2003 to 2009, he served as a teaching assistant at the Charles University.  Before joining the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in 2010, he was a postdoctoral fellow in the group of prof. Josef Michl at the Institute of Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry (IOCB), Czech Academy of Sciences in Prague (2007-2010), working on the functionalization of carboranes.  In 2010 he joined the group of prof. Marcel Mayor at the Institute of Nanotechnology in Karlsruhe, Germany.  His current research in the Mayor’s group is focused on the synthesis of azobenzene molecular switches and development of new molecular anchoring groups for molecular electronics.
